How is this calendar made?
Each festival has a classical rule. Diwali falls on Kartika Amavasya during pradosh, Janmashtami on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami at midnight, and Makar Sankranti when the Sun enters sidereal Capricorn. Our engine applies these rules to the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon, computes each muhurat from sunrise and sunset, and moves the calendar forward every day.
We have checked the 2025 to 2028 dates against Drik Panchang for New Delhi. Some festivals are kept differently by tradition: Vaishnava (ISKCON) Janmashtami or Ekadashi can fall a day later, and some festivals carry different names or days in East and South India. In such cases, follow your family custom.
Questions about the festival calendar
Why do Hindu festival dates change every year?
Hindu festivals follow lunar tithis while the civil calendar is solar. A lunar year is about 354 days, so festivals move about 10 to 11 days earlier each year, and an extra (adhika) month roughly every three years pulls them back in line with the seasons.
Why do different panchangs sometimes give different dates?
The festival day depends on sunrise and on special parts of the day such as pradosh or nishita, which differ by city. Some festivals also follow different Smarta and Vaishnava rules. We check our dates against Drik Panchang and note where a difference is possible.
What are amanta and purnimanta months?
In the amanta system (South and West India) a lunar month ends on the new moon; in the purnimanta system (North India) it ends on the full moon. The festival day is the same; only the month name of the waning fortnight differs.
Does this calendar update itself?
Yes. Each festival is stored as a rule and the engine computes the next date and muhurat every day. As soon as a festival passes, its page and this calendar move on to the next one.
