Purnima, the full-moon day, closes each lunar month in the purnimanta calendar. Many families keep a vrat, read the Satyanarayan katha, take a holy bath and give charity. Several Purnimas are major festivals in their own right: Guru Purnima, Raksha Bandhan, Sharad Purnima and Kartik Purnima. Here is every Purnima for the next twelve months.

Meaning and story of Purnima dates

The full Moon is linked with completeness and a calm mind. The Purnima of each month is named after its lunar month and carries its own customs.

Purnima can begin in the afternoon of one day and end on the next. The list shows the day on which Purnima is current at sunrise (the bathing and charity day), with exact tithi times.

How the vrat is kept

  1. Bathe early, in a river if possible.
  2. Worship Vishnu (Satyanarayan) or your family deity; read the Satyanarayan katha if your family keeps it.
  3. Offer water to the Moon in the evening.
  4. Donate food or clothes.

Why can the Purnima vrat be a day earlier?

A vrat that needs the full Moon at moonrise is kept on the evening Purnima is current, which can be the day before the sunrise (bathing) day.

What is the Satyanarayan puja?

A popular Purnima puja of Vishnu as Satyanarayan, with a katha and prasad of sheera.

How many Purnimas are in a year?

Twelve, or thirteen when there is an adhika month.

Which Purnimas are major festivals?

Guru Purnima, Raksha Bandhan, Sharad Purnima, Kartik Purnima, Buddha Purnima and Holika Dahan.

How are these dates worked out?

Every festival is fixed by a rule: the lunar month, the paksha, the tithi, and the part of the day (such as pradosh, madhyahna or nishita) in which that tithi must fall. Our engine finds the next time that happens from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon and computes the muhurat from your city’s sunrise and sunset. Dates are checked against Drik Panchang. Where traditions differ, such as Smarta and Vaishnava reckoning, we say so above; your family custom or local priest always comes first.
