How is this panchang calculated?

Sunrise and sunset are computed for the chosen city’s latitude and longitude, including atmospheric refraction, at the moment the Sun’s upper edge touches the horizon, the convention used by printed almanacs. Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana come from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon, and every end time is solved to the minute. The lunar month is shown in both the purnimanta system used across North India and the amanta system used in the South and West.

The panchang rebuilds itself every day; nobody types it in. Festival dates can differ slightly by local custom, so check with your family priest or local almanac before a ritual.

What do people ask about the panchang?

What are the five limbs of the panchang?

Tithi (the lunar day), vara (the weekday), nakshatra (the Moon’s star), yoga (a combination of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes) and karana (half a tithi). “Pancha-anga” literally means five limbs.

What is Rahu Kaal?

The daylight from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts, and one fixed part for each weekday is called Rahu Kaal. Tradition avoids starting new ventures in it. Because it depends on local sunrise and sunset, it differs from city to city.

Why is the tithi counted at sunrise?

The Hindu day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so the tithi current at sunrise names the whole day, even if it ends a few hours later. That is why we show each limb’s end time and what follows it.
