Vasant Panchami welcomes spring and honours Goddess Saraswati, giver of knowledge, music and the arts. Students place books and instruments before her, children begin writing their first letters, and homes glow in yellow. Here is this year’s date and the morning puja muhurat for your city.
Meaning and story of Vasant Panchami
Saraswati is described as appearing on this day, bringing speech and music to the world. Schools and colleges across eastern India hold Saraswati Puja, and many families choose it for vidyarambh, a child’s first lesson.
Yellow, the colour of mustard fields in bloom, is everywhere: clothes, flowers, saffron rice and sweets. The day is considered so auspicious that it is often called an abujh muhurat, good for beginnings without further checking.
Puja vidhi, step by step
- Bathe and wear yellow or white.
- In the morning muhurat, place an image of Saraswati on a yellow cloth with books, pens and instruments.
- Offer yellow flowers, sandalwood, rice, sweets (kesari bhaat, boondi) and a lamp.
- Chant “Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah” or the Saraswati Vandana.

How are these dates worked out?
Every festival is fixed by a rule: the lunar month, the paksha, the tithi, and the part of the day (such as pradosh, madhyahna or nishita) in which that tithi must fall. Our engine finds the next time that happens from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon and computes the muhurat from your city’s sunrise and sunset. Dates are checked against Drik Panchang. Where traditions differ, such as Smarta and Vaishnava reckoning, we say so above; your family custom or local priest always comes first.
