Kartik Purnima is the full moon that closes the sacred month of Kartika. People take a holy bath, float lamps on rivers and light them at temples; in Varanasi it is Dev Deepawali, the Diwali of the gods. Here is this year’s date, the Purnima timings and moonrise for your city.

Meaning and story of Kartik Purnima

Shiva is said to have destroyed the three cities of the demon Tripurasura on this day, so it is also Tripuri Purnima, and the gods are said to celebrate with lamps on the ghats of Kashi. It is also linked with Vishnu’s Matsya avatar and, for Sikhs, often coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti.

It is a day of light and giving. A dip in a river, a lamp floated on water, a donation of food or warm clothes, and quiet prayer are its gentle rituals.

Puja vidhi, step by step

  1. Bathe early, in a river if possible or at home with a few drops of Ganga water.
  2. Offer water to the Sun and worship Vishnu or Shiva with flowers and a lamp.
  3. Read the Satyanarayan katha in the evening if your family keeps it.
  4. At dusk, light lamps at home, at a temple or float them on clean water.
  5. Donate food, lamps, blankets or grain.

What is Dev Deepawali?

The “Diwali of the gods”, celebrated in Varanasi on Kartik Purnima with lakhs of lamps lit along the ghats of the Ganga.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated on Kartik Purnima, so in most years they share the date.

When should the holy bath be taken?

Early morning, from before sunrise while Purnima is current, is traditional. If Purnima ends early in the day, almanacs still keep the bath on the sunrise day.

Why do Purnima dates sometimes differ?

Purnima can begin in the afternoon of one day and end the next. Fasts that need the full Moon at moonrise can be kept the day before the bathing day.

How are these dates worked out?

Every festival is fixed by a rule: the lunar month, the paksha, the tithi, and the part of the day (such as pradosh, madhyahna or nishita) in which that tithi must fall. Our engine finds the next time that happens from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon and computes the muhurat from your city’s sunrise and sunset. Dates are checked against Drik Panchang. Where traditions differ, such as Smarta and Vaishnava reckoning, we say so above; your family custom or local priest always comes first.
