Dev Uthani Ekadashi marks the day Lord Vishnu wakes after four months of yogic sleep (Chaturmas). Auspicious work such as weddings and housewarmings traditionally resumes from here. Here is this year’s date and the parana (fast-breaking) time for your city.
Meaning and story of Dev Uthani Ekadashi
Vishnu is said to rest from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha until Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartika. During these four months, Chaturmas, people focus on prayer, fasting and simple living. On Dev Uthani Ekadashi families “wake” the Lord with songs, the sound of plates and conch, and sugarcane mandaps.
The next day many homes celebrate Tulsi Vivah, and the wedding season begins. It is a day of fresh beginnings after a season of patience.
Puja vidhi, step by step
- Take a bath early and keep the Ekadashi fast: fruit and milk, or without grains if a full fast is not possible.
- Draw the Lord’s footprints with rice paste or chalk; make a small mandap of sugarcane.
- Worship Vishnu with tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, sweets and seasonal produce such as water chestnut and sweet potato.
- In the evening, sing and ring a bell or beat a plate to wake the Lord: “Utho Dev, baitho Dev”.
- Break the fast the next morning in the parana window shown above.

Questions about Dev Uthani Ekadashi
When is Dev Uthani Ekadashi?
The next Dev Uthani Ekadashi is on Friday, 20 November 2026: Kartika Shukla Ekadashi. For New Delhi, parana (breaking the fast): 6:48 am (21 Nov) – 8:55 am (21 Nov). Times change by city; choose yours above.
What is parana?
Breaking the Ekadashi fast on the next day, after sunrise, within Dwadashi and after the first quarter of Dwadashi (Hari Vasara). The window above is calculated for your city.
Why do some calendars show two dates?
When Ekadashi touches two sunrises, almanacs list the fast for householders on one day and a second (Gauna) day for ascetics or Vaishnavas. We show the householder (Smarta) date; ISKCON dates can be a day later.
Can weddings happen from this day?
Tradition treats the end of Chaturmas as the reopening of auspicious work. Specific wedding dates still depend on a muhurat chosen for the couple.
What is Tulsi Vivah?
The symbolic wedding of the tulsi plant with Lord Vishnu (as Shaligram or Krishna), celebrated on the day after this Ekadashi in most homes.
How are these dates worked out?
Every festival is fixed by a rule: the lunar month, the paksha, the tithi, and the part of the day (such as pradosh, madhyahna or nishita) in which that tithi must fall. Our engine finds the next time that happens from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon and computes the muhurat from your city’s sunrise and sunset. Dates are checked against Drik Panchang. Where traditions differ, such as Smarta and Vaishnava reckoning, we say so above; your family custom or local priest always comes first.
