Ekadashi, the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight, is the most widely kept vrat in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. There are 24 Ekadashis a year (26 in a year with an adhika month), each with its own name and story. Below is every Ekadashi for the next twelve months with the parana time for your city.
Meaning and story of Ekadashi dates
Ekadashi fasting is about lightness: giving the body rest from grains, and the mind time for prayer. Each Ekadashi has a story in the Puranas, such as Nirjala Ekadashi, the strictest, and Dev Uthani, when Vishnu wakes from Chaturmas.
The fast is broken on Dwadashi, the next morning, in the parana window: after sunrise, after the first quarter of Dwadashi (Hari Vasara), and ideally in the morning.
How the vrat is kept
- On Dashami evening, eat a light meal.
- On Ekadashi, bathe, worship Vishnu with tulsi and yellow flowers, and keep the fast as your health allows.
- Avoid grains and beans; fruit, milk, nuts, sabudana and kuttu are common.
- Read the day’s Ekadashi katha or the Vishnu Sahasranama.
- Break the fast in the parana window the next day.
What you will need
- Tulsi leaves
- Yellow flowers
- Fruit and milk

- Drink enough water if keeping a fruit fast.

- Don’t push a waterless fast if you are unwell, pregnant or diabetic.

Questions about Ekadashi dates
When is the next Ekadashi?
The next is Rama Ekadashi on Thursday, 5 November 2026. For New Delhi, the tithi runs from 11:04 am (4 Nov) to 10:36 am.
What is the parana time?
The window on Dwadashi morning to break the fast: after sunrise, after the first quarter of Dwadashi, and before Dwadashi ends.
Why do some calendars list two days?
When Ekadashi spans two sunrises, the first day is for householders (Smarta) and the second (Gauna) for others. We show the householder date.
Can I drink water on Ekadashi?
Yes, except on Nirjala Ekadashi if you are keeping it strictly. A gentle fast is fully within tradition.
How many Ekadashis are there in a year?
Usually 24; 26 when an adhika (leap) month occurs.
How are these dates worked out?
Every festival is fixed by a rule: the lunar month, the paksha, the tithi, and the part of the day (such as pradosh, madhyahna or nishita) in which that tithi must fall. Our engine finds the next time that happens from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon and computes the muhurat from your city’s sunrise and sunset. Dates are checked against Drik Panchang. Where traditions differ, such as Smarta and Vaishnava reckoning, we say so above; your family custom or local priest always comes first.
