How is this sky calculated?
Each graha’s position comes from an astronomical ephemeris and is converted to the sidereal zodiac by subtracting the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Government of India’s national calendar. Rahu and Ketu are the mean lunar nodes, which is why they always show as retrograde. Positions are recalculated every few minutes, and the “As of” time above tells you exactly which moment you are looking at.
What does retrograde mean?
Seen from Earth, a planet sometimes appears to move backwards against the stars. It is an effect of viewing angle, as Earth overtakes or is overtaken by the planet; nothing actually reverses. Tradition links retrograde periods with review and returning to unfinished matters. The Sun and Moon are never retrograde.
Why is this different from a Western horoscope?
Western (tropical) astrology uses a zodiac tied to the seasons, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac tied to the stars. The two are now about 24° apart, so most planets appear here one sign earlier than in a Western almanac. Your own birth chart uses the same sidereal method.
