Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters tie a rakhi, apply tilak and pray for their brother’s wellbeing; brothers promise care and give a gift. Here is this year’s date, the rakhi muhurat and Bhadra timings for your city.
Meaning and story of Raksha Bandhan
When Krishna cut his finger, Draupadi tore her sari to bandage it; Krishna promised to protect her, and kept that promise. Queen Karnavati’s rakhi to Emperor Humayun is another remembered story. The thread stands for a promise of care that goes both ways.
On the same full Moon, Brahmins renew their sacred thread (Upakarma) and coastal communities celebrate Narali Purnima, offering coconuts to the sea.

Questions about Raksha Bandhan
When is Raksha Bandhan?
The next Raksha Bandhan is on Tuesday, 17 August 2027: Shravana Purnima, avoiding Bhadra. For New Delhi, rakhi muhurat: 5:51 am – 12:59 pm. Times change by city; choose yours above.
What is Bhadra and why is it avoided?
Bhadra (Vishti karana) is a half-tithi tradition avoids for auspicious acts. On Shravana Purnima it covers the first half of the tithi, so almanacs place the rakhi muhurat after it ends.
What if Bhadra lasts all day?
When Bhadra covers the afternoon and Purnima continues into the next morning for at least about two and a half hours, the rakhi is tied the next morning. That is the rule we follow.
Can sisters tie rakhi to sisters?
Yes. Many families celebrate the bond between all siblings.
Which wrist is the rakhi tied on?
Traditionally the right wrist.
How are these dates worked out?
Every festival is fixed by a rule: the lunar month, the paksha, the tithi, and the part of the day (such as pradosh, madhyahna or nishita) in which that tithi must fall. Our engine finds the next time that happens from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon and computes the muhurat from your city’s sunrise and sunset. Dates are checked against Drik Panchang. Where traditions differ, such as Smarta and Vaishnava reckoning, we say so above; your family custom or local priest always comes first.
