Ganesh Chaturthi welcomes Lord Ganesha into homes and pandals for one to ten days of devotion, music and modaks, ending with visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi. Here is this year’s date and the midday sthapana muhurat for your city.
Meaning and story of Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesha, remover of obstacles and lord of beginnings, is believed to have been born at midday on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. Lokmanya Tilak turned the home festival into a public celebration in Maharashtra, and it is now loved across India and the world.
By custom people avoid looking at the Moon on this night, remembering a story in which the Moon laughed at Ganesha. The festival’s real message is humility and a fresh start.

How are these dates worked out?
Every festival is fixed by a rule: the lunar month, the paksha, the tithi, and the part of the day (such as pradosh, madhyahna or nishita) in which that tithi must fall. Our engine finds the next time that happens from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon and computes the muhurat from your city’s sunrise and sunset. Dates are checked against Drik Panchang. Where traditions differ, such as Smarta and Vaishnava reckoning, we say so above; your family custom or local priest always comes first.
