Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, born at midday on Chaitra Shukla Navami in Ayodhya. Temples ring bells at noon, the Ramayana is read and families share panakam and kheer. Here is this year’s date and the midday muhurat for your city.

Meaning and story of Ram Navami

Rama is honoured as maryada purushottam, the ideal of integrity, kindness and duty. His birth at noon, when the Sun is at its highest, is celebrated with a cradle ceremony in temples and homes.

Ram Navami concludes Chaitra Navratri. In the south it is often celebrated as Rama and Sita’s wedding, with community feasts.

  2. Decorate a small cradle with an idol of baby Rama.
  3. At the madhyahna muhurat, perform the birth celebration: bell, conch, flowers, tulsi and aarti.
  4. Offer panakam (jaggery-pepper drink), kosambari or kheer.

How are these dates worked out?

Every festival is fixed by a rule: the lunar month, the paksha, the tithi, and the part of the day (such as pradosh, madhyahna or nishita) in which that tithi must fall. Our engine finds the next time that happens from the sidereal (Lahiri) Sun and Moon and computes the muhurat from your city’s sunrise and sunset. Dates are checked against Drik Panchang. Where traditions differ, such as Smarta and Vaishnava reckoning, we say so above; your family custom or local priest always comes first.
